The quality control differences between Gr1 and Gr2 titanium plates

In the titanium processing industry, although Gr1 (TA1) and Gr2 (TA2) both belong to industrial pure titanium, the differences in their core chemical composition and mechanical properties result in completely different key points of full-process control from raw material input to finished product.

1. Feeding and smelting
Gr1 pursues ultimate purity and must use high-grade sponge titanium with low oxygen and low iron content. During smelting, precise control is required to prevent contamination and ensure that interstitial elements (such as O≤0.18%) meet the standards. The raw material requirements for Gr2 are relatively loose, the process window is wider, and the production efficiency and yield rate are higher.

2. Hot working and rolling
Gr1 has low strength, excellent plasticity, small deformation resistance and low rolling force requirements. However, it is prone to surface scratches and grain coarsening, and the surface quality and grain size need to be controlled with emphasis. Gr2 has higher strength and greater deformation resistance, requiring greater rolling force. It has better process stability and pays more attention to dimensional accuracy and performance uniformity.

3. Cold working and annealing
This is the key distinguishing point. Gr1 has a low work hardening rate, can withstand large deformation cold rolling, and has a low intermediate annealing frequency. Gr2 shows obvious work hardening and requires more frequent intermediate annealing to eliminate hardening and restore plasticity. The annealing systems of the two also vary due to different recrystallization behaviors.

4. Finished product Inspection and application
When inspecting Gr1 finished products, be vigilant against strength "non-compliance" (below the lower limit of the standard). Its core advantage lies in its unparalleled cold formability (such as a smaller bending radius), making it suitable for extreme forming fields like chemical linings and deep drawing parts. Gr2 inspection must ensure the best balance between strength and plasticity. It has excellent comprehensive performance and is the "cost-performance" first choice for most industrial applications such as heat exchangers, containers, and structural components.

Summary
The essence of producing Gr1 is to "preserve purity and plastic quality", and throughout the process, any factors that might lead to an increase in performance must be avoided. The core of Gr2 production lies in "maintaining stability and seeking balance", aiming to stably achieve the best combination of its strength and plasticity. This understanding serves as the foundation for material selection, process design and cost control.
