How to go from titanium sponge to titanium coil?

Grade 1 titanium coil

Grade 1 titanium coils are produced through a combination of processes starting from titanium ore extraction, refining, reduction to titanium sponge, forging, rolling, annealing, and surface treatments. The result is a high-purity, corrosion-resistant material that is widely used in industries like aerospace, medical devices, and chemical processing.

Titanium sponge is compressed and heated to form titanium ingots. These ingots are large blocks of titanium that will be further processed into sheets, plates, or coils. The titanium ingots are typically heated to high temperatures and then forged or extruded into titanium billets. This step helps remove internal porosity and impurities and ensures the titanium has a uniform structure.

Next, the titanium billets undergo hot rolling, where they are heated to a specific temperature (usually between 700°C and 900°C) and passed through a series of rollers. This reduces the thickness of the titanium and shapes it into thin plates or sheets. The hot-rolled product is typically referred to as titanium plate. After hot rolling, the titanium sheet or plate may undergo cold rolling. Cold rolling is a process that occurs at room temperature, where the material is further thinned by passing through rollers, improving surface finish and achieving the desired mechanical properties. Cold rolling increases the material's strength and hardness.

To restore the ductility of the cold-rolled titanium, annealing (heat treatment) is typically performed. This involves heating the titanium plate to a specific temperature and then slowly cooling it. Annealing eliminates internal stresses, improves formability, and enhances the uniformity of the material. For Grade 1 titanium, annealing is particularly important because it improves the material's ability to be formed into thin sheets or coils without cracking.

Once the titanium is processed into thin sheets or plates, it can be cut to the required size and thickness. For coils, the titanium plates are rolled into the final coil shape. This is usually done in a cold rolling mill, where the metal is carefully rolled into tightly wound coils. The coils can then be flattened or uncoiled to make titanium sheets as required by the customer.Titanium coils typically undergo surface treatments to remove oxides, impurities, and surface defects. Common surface treatments include pickling (acid cleaning) or polishing. Some applications may require a matte or mirror finish.
