Titanium anode is one of the Dimensionally stable anodes (DSA), which are also called dimensionally stable electrodes (DSE), precious metal-coated titanium anodes (PMTA), noble metal coated anode (NMCA), oxide-coated titanium anode (OCTA), or activated titanium anode (ATA), are composed of a thin layer (a few micrometers) of mixed metal oxides (MMO) such as RuO2, IrO2, PbO2, Ta2O5 on titanium metals.

 

Sewage, also called domestic wastewater or municipal wastewater, is a type of wastewater that is released from households after use for various purposes like washing dishes, laundry, and flushing the toilet.

 

Untreated sewage may contain a range of chemicals and specialized wastes including nutrients, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, medical wastes, oils, and greases. These result in additional threats to both human health and the environment. Thus, essential treatment is required before sewage is discharged into water bodies, onto soil, or for reuse applications.

 

Compared to traditional physical-chemical treatment, electrolytic processes are much better for screened sewage clarification, disinfection, and phosphate removal to reduce costs and process detention times.

 

Chlorine has been one of the most widely used disinfectants for sanitization. It kills pathogens such as bacteria and viruses by breaking the chemical bonds in their molecules. Compared to the traditional laborious method of adding chemical disinfectants to the water, electrochlorination processing has been recognized as a convenient and highly efficient method for water disinfection. And the disinfecting effect can be adjusted according to the on-site demand. This technique is widely applied in germ-free water supplies, wastewater treatment, swimming pool sterilization, etc.

 

In most practical applications, hypochlorous acid (HClO) and/or hypochlorite (NaClO) are produced via the electrolysis of salty water (NaCl) by passing an electric current through perforated or unperforated plate electrodes inserted into the reactor pipe.

 

Very great differences have been found in the efficiency of free chlorine production between different electrode materials. It can be seen that titanium electrodes (using active coatings of IrO2 or IrO2/RuO2) outperform boron-doped diamond and platinum electrodes, which are therefore not generally applicable as anode materials with very low production efficiency for free chlorine.
